As part of the decennial year programme, The World Cancer Day 2014 was observed in Paalana on 4th February. The observation of the Cancer day started with a meeting inaugurated by Fr. Johnson Kannampadathil, joint Director of Paalana. He reminded that World Cancer Day 2014 focuses on dispelling four major damaging myths and misconceptions about cancer. First of all, there is a misunderstanding that we don’t need to talk about cancer, but the truth is that though cancer is a difficult topic to be addressed, it should be dealt openly without fear. Secondly, many think that there are no signs or symptoms of cancer. But the truth is that for many cancers, there are warning signs and symptoms and benefits of early detection are indisputable. Thirdly, a cancer patient may deem that s/he can do nothing about cancer. But, there is a lot that can be done at a patient, community and policy level and most common cancers can be prevented. Fourthly, often cancer patients think that they don’t have the right to cancer care. However all the people have right to access proven and effective cancer treatments and services on equal terms and without suffering hardship as a consequence.
As part of cancer awareness programme, Dr. Peethambaran, Dr. Joy Mani, Dr. Haseena took classes on different aspects of cancer. More than hundred people from outside registered and attended the programme. Dr.Sr. Lucella welcomed the gathering and Sr. Sini O.S.F., Sr. Deepa O.S.F., Sr. Francina O.S.F., Sr. Linda C.H.F., Sr. Rose Anto C.H.F., Sr. Ligi F.C.C., Miss Vibha and Gipin toiled behind the curtain for the success of the observation day.
